Recycle Your Old Toothbrushes at Harvie Dental

May 16, 2021 by Harvie Dental

16th May 2021

The team at Harvie Dental are proud to announce that we partner with TerraCycle to provide recycling stations at our clinic. TerraCycle is a social enterprise with the goal of eliminating waste across 21 countries. They can take materials that are hard to otherwise recycle, such as hard plastics, and turn them into new products.

According to the Terracycle website, they have recycled over 7 billion individual pieces of waste, and have raised over $44 million for charity. Harvie Dental has partnered with Terracycle to bring this opportunity to our patients. How it works is: when you pop in for your appointment, bring any old toothbrushes or toothpaste tubes along with you. Then, just deposit them into the Recycle Station Box in our foyer.

Once the box is full, we send the used items off to TerraCycle, who are able to save them from creating more landfill in our beautiful ecosystem.

Harvie Dental is proud to be contributing in our own way towards environmental sustainability. Next time you come for your checkup, remember to bring your old toothbrush!

To get in touch with our team, call (07) 5520 2277.

Is your child eligible for $1000 worth of free dental?

June 9, 2016 by Harvie Dental

In January 2014, the Australian Government introduced the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS). This schedule is designed to help all children have fair access to basic dental services. Under the CDBS, a child may be eligible for up to $1000 of free dental work over a period of two consecutive calendar years.

What is covered under the Child Dental Benefits Schedule?

The CBDS will cover a range of services, including:

  • Examinations
  • Cleaning
  • X-rays
  • Fillings
  • Fissure Sealing
  • Extractions
  • Root Canals

The CDBS does not count towards the Medicare Safety Net or the Extended Medicare Safety Net thresholds.

What is not covered under the Child Dental Benefits Schedule?

The CBDS does not cover:

  • Orthodontic work
  • Cosmetic dentistry
  • Any services provided in a hospital

Is my child eligible for the Child Dental Benefits Schedule?

To be eligible for the CDBS, a child must be:

  • Between the ages of 2 and 17 for a minimum of one day of the calendar year
  • eligible for medicare
  • and for at least one day of the calendar year, you, or your child must be the recipient of some form of financial assistance from the government. The full list of payment lists that will make you eligible for the CDBS are available from the Australian Department of Human Services.

DIY Braces, what could go wrong?

April 27, 2016 by Harvie Dental

Short answer: a lot.

There was a bit of a stir recently when a 24 year old digital design student, made his own braces using a a high-end 3D printer at his university in America. You can read more about it here.

While this innovation is great and will certainly help advance the dental industry in the future, the growing trend of DIY braces is a worrying one. The incorrect alignment of teeth can cause huge issues in the future, causing changes to the bite. This can lead to tooth wear, bone loss and possibly even pain in the future.

If you are unhappy with your smile, we recommend coming in and seeing us for a check up so that we can refer you to a qualified orthodontist.

Book an appointment today. Call our Burleigh dental clinic on 07 5520 2277.

Go Green For Oral Health

October 6, 2015 by Harvie Dental

Green tea has been around in many Asian countries such as China and Japan for thousands of years and to this day is enjoyed by many world wide.

As well as its great taste and low caffeine content there are many benefits for your health that come from drinking green tea, including a range of benefits for your oral health.

Cavity Prevention + Gum Health

Green tea contains particles that are known to control and reduce inflammation and fight bacteria. It is suggested that these compounds are effective in controlling the levels of acidity in the saliva, which reduces the levels of dental plaque.

Goodbye To Bad Breath
Who doesn’t want better-smelling breath? Green tea has also been associated with better smelling breath. This is most likely due to the fact that green tea kills off the microbes that help make our mouth smell bad.

Secrets To A Great Smile

September 10, 2015 by Harvie Dental

From staff photos to selfies, It’s hard to avoid having your photo taken these days. iPhones, photo sharing and social media mean that no one can hide from being seen in photos.

But you don’t need to be George Clooney or Angelina Jolie to flash your chompers and smile for the camera!

Dog wearing green straw hat and sun glasses, isolated

Here’s a few little tips that we think will make you more happy to pose for that selfie, or share that photo with a friend:

  • El Natural
When it comes to photo time, be as natural as you can. Try not to force a smile so your face looks more relaxed.
Tucking your toung down behind your teeth and having them slightly apart will help with this.
  • Practice, Practice, Practice
They say practice makes perfect, why do you think the models always look so good!
  • Keep your Teeth Clean
Nobody wants to be tagged in a photo on Facebook with spinach in between their teeth!
  • Smile With Your Eyes
For your smile to look authentic, it can’t be all teeth and no eyes. When you are genuinely smiling the muscles of the eyes and mouth are both pulling back. This causes natural wrinkles around the eyes, so people know your genuinely smiling!
  • Your Best Angle
It’s not always possible, but when it is make sure you chose to be in the spot that you most like.Tilt your body or your head slightly so you are not completely square with the camera.
  • Posture
Stand up straight and you will look more happy and confident.
