The saying “prevention is better than cure”, couldn’t be truer when it comes to caring for your teeth and oral health.
Preventative dentistry should be regarded as the best way of helping to keep your mouth healthy and your teeth in a condition that reduces the need for treatment.
Harvie Dental recommend you visit your dentist every 6 months for an exam and clean appointment (with some patients requiring more frequent visits 3-4 monthly cleans) to stay on top of your oral health needs and identify potential problems and prevent them from happening. Often decay does not cause pain or become visible until it has become more advanced.
Routine Check Up and Clean
This will include a thorough examination of your teeth, gums, and tongue (observing for any changes in the oral environment) and cleaning of any calculus/plaque buildup. The cleaning process involves removing calculus off your teeth, which is hardened plaque caused by bacteria that may contribute to gum disease. Often calculus is under the gumline and requires a professional dental clean. Your teeth may be polished, and fluoride applied which is used to help strengthen the teeth from decay and remineralise any weakened enamel that was present within the mouth.
We may also request consent to take x-rays to check for cavities and inspect the health of your jaw bones.
